structure and function of organelles Flashcards

1
Q

Mitocondria

A

An organelle with a highly folded inner membrane surrounded by a second outer membrane. Mitchocondria is a site of aerobic cellular respiration, a chemical to power cellular processes. They also contain their own DNA and ribosomes

Q

Golgi Body

A

Stacked flatten sacks that are sites of protien sorting, packaging, and modifiction for use in the cell or export. Protien filled vesicles often fuse with or bud off from the golgi apparatus

Q

Nucleus

A

The nucleus is surronded by a double membrane. Its role is to protect and confine the gentic information{DNA} of the cell. Inside the nucleus is a smaller structure known as the nucleoulus which is the site of ribosome production.

Q

Rough ER

A

A membranous chain of connected and flattended sacs which are coated with ribososmes. This allows the rough ER to synthesise and modify protiens. the rough ER reticulum typically surronds, or is close to, the nucleus

Q

Smooth ER

A

A membranious chain of connected and flattend sacs which are not coated with ribosomes. The smooth ER is responsible for the production of lipids in a cell

chloroplast

A

A double membrane bound organelle that contains flatend, fluid filled sacs that are the site of photosynthesis. Chloroplasts also contain their own DNA and ribosomes

A

A sturdy boarder outside the plasma membrane that provides strength and structure to plant, bacterial, and fungal cells

Q

Vacuole

A

A membrane bound sac that is used for water and solute storage. Vacuoles can also play a role in maintaining plant cell structure.
