Supporting health behaviours Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the main limitation of providing only information to change behaviour?
Providing only information may not change behaviour because people need more than knowledge; understanding what drives behaviour is essential for effective change.
What is the Stages of Change model?
A model proposed by Prochaska & DiClemente (1997) that outlines five stages in the process of behaviour change: Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance.
What is a key insight of the Stages of Change model regarding behaviour change?
It emphasises the importance of identifying the stage a person is in to predict success and highlights the challenge of relapse.
What are the components of the COM-B model?
Capability (psychological and physical), Opportunity (physical and social), and Motivation (reflective and automatic).
How can capability be increased to support behaviour change?
By increasing knowledge through consultations, leaflets, signposting, and providing skills or equipment training.
What strategies can increase opportunity in the COM-B model?
Running seasonal clinics, health campaigns (e.g., Stoptober, flu service), and being available to talk to patients.
How can motivation be enhanced according to the COM-B model?
By increasing capability and opportunity, encouraging reflection on long-term benefits, and making the target behaviour more desirable.
What are the key steps to supporting behaviour change?
Identify the behaviour to change, determine the goal or outcome, assess factors preventing change (capability, opportunity, motivation), and choose a suitable intervention using ‘Ask – Advise – Act’.
What is the ‘Ask – Advise – Act’ approach?
A framework for supporting behaviour change: Ask about the behaviour, Advise on what needs to change, and Act by helping the patient make the change.
What is the role of the COM-B model in behaviour change?
It helps to diagnose what factors need to change (capability, opportunity, motivation) to support behaviour change.
What stage of change is a patient most likely at if they have set a quit date and are selecting a product to quit smoking?
Preparation stage.
