Synaptic Transmission Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does a presynaptic cell consist of?
Nerve impulse
Synaptic cleft
Synaptic vesicles
Neurotransmitter
How is information passed down an axon?
as an electrical impulse known as action potential
What is the synaptic gap?
a gap between the pre-synaptic neurone and post-synaptic neurone that the action potential must cross over
What is in the axon terminal at the end of a neurone and what does it do?
synaptic vesicles, that release their contents of neurotransmitters
When does a synaptic vesicle release its neurone transmitters?
when the electrical impulse reaches them
What do neurotransmitters carry?
the signal across the synaptic gap
What binds to receptor sites the post-synaptic cell to make them activated?
neurotransmitters
What happens once the receptors have been activated?
they. either produce excitatory or inhibitory effects on the post-synaptic cell
What are the two types of neurotransmitters?
excitatory
inhibitory
What type of neurotransmitter causes the post synaptic to be more likely to fire?
if a neurotransmitter is excitatory
What type of neurotransmitter causes the post synaptic to be less likely to fire?
if a neurotransmitter is inhibitory
what sums the influence of the neurotransmitter?
if then net effect on the post synaptic neurone is inhibitory/excitatory the neurone will less/more likely fire
