The Nervous system Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?
Central nervous system(CNS)
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
What is the main function of the CNS?
The main function is the integration and processing of sensory information
What is the Central Nervous System made up of?
The Spinal chord and the brain
What are the four main lobes of the brain?
Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Temporal lobe
Occipital lobe
What is the function of the Frontal lobe?
planning abstract reasoning and logic
What is the function of the Parietal lobe?
integrates sensory information. and therefore play the most important role in spatial navigation
What is the function of the Temporal lobe?
auditory information processing
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
visual information processing
What is the role of the spinal cord?
To transfer messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body
Also responsible for simple reflex actions that don’t involve the brain
What is the role of the. Peripheral nervous system
to relay messages (nerve impulses) from the CNS to the rest of the body
What are the two main components of the Peripheral nervous system?
Somatic nervous system
Automatic nervous system
What is the somatic nervous system made up of?
Sensory receptors
Motor pathways
What is the role of the somatic nervous system?
to carry sensory information from the outside world. to the brain and provide muscle responses via the motor pathways
Which system plays an important role in homeostasis?
Autonomic nervous system
What are the two components in the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic nervous system
Parasympathetic nervous system
What system only consists of motor pathways?
Autonomic nervous system
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system
to relax the body and return us to our ‘normal’ resting state
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system
prepare the body for fight or flight
how does the sympathetic nervous system prepare the body for fight to flight?
Impulses travel from the sympathetic nervous system to organs in the body to help us prepare for actions when we are faces with a dangerous situation
