What was Syria like before the war?

A

It had a population of 23 million people. Up until 2011 it had a stable economy supported by oil and natural gas extraction. Citizens had a lack of freedom because of the Assad family.

Why was Syria at war?

A

Syria was at war because of pro-democracy demonstrations began in march 2011. The unrest spread and was met with force by the government. In turn, protesters armed themselves and the violence increased. Also regional and world powers became involved and made it worse
