tectonics L8 multiple hazard zones & hazard profiles Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
what is a Multiple Hazard Zone?
A
locations where many hazards combine
if the zone has a high vulnerability or frequency it can become a disaster hotspot
2
Q
the Philippines as a MHZ
A
- destructive boundary — volcanic activity, shallow and deep focus earthquakes
vulnerability:
- mostly mountainous land with coastal lowlands
- lies in typhoon belt — 15 typhoons a year — $19 mil in economic damage over 55 years
- tropical climate
- 22 active volcanoes
- poorly constructed infrastructure
- Typhoon Haiyan, 2013 — 9500 deaths
3
Q
Tectonic Hazard Profiles
A
- compares physical characteristics that hazards share
- help decision makers when deciding where to allocate the most human & financial resources
- Frequency, Areal Extent, Magnitude, Duration, Speed of onset, Spatial predictability.
- doesn’t cover human elements
4
Q
what is a HILP?
A
High impact, low probability events
