The process of natural selection
Nature (the environment) selects physical changes (ex. mutations) animals with adaptive changes live and reproduce effectively, animals with other changes do not. Natural selection is a likely (but perhaps not ultimate) source of the brain and psychological needs.
Evolved mental mechanisms
Fears ( our fears are not random and are not entirely determined by our environment like John Watson believed, evolution is one reason why we have some of our fears) taste preferences (prefer salty and sweet, dislike bitter)
The need to belong theory
Living in groups (being social) was our strategy for survival and reproduction. needing to belong and being good at belonging conveyed an advantage. humans have a pervasive motive to form and maintain social relationships (has to be a frequent, positive stable relationship to satisfy this need)
The social pain theory
The brain responds in the same way to emotional pain as it does physical pain (same area of pain activated when we feel rejected as when we feel physical pain)
