what is philosophy etymology speaking?
the love of wisdom

every time one wonders they are faced with a fact and are looking for a reason or cause

men do not start with knowledge and they want to figure out and learn the causes of things

knowledge goes against other desires/appetites, presumption- you think you know when you don’t, despair- you don’t think you’ll ever find out the answer
what is absolute relativism
truth is relative, there is no truth
arguments against absolute relativism
practical: there would be no point in doing anything/learning
logical: by saying there is no truth is contradictory

what is the purpose of speech and the two sets of accomplished speakers?
the purpose of speaking is to tell the truth, but the two types of speakers are those who tell the truth or those who speak persuasively
Two sets of accusers?
The old accusers and the recent accusers
what set of accusers are more dangerous?
old accusers because they have been around for a long time, they are nameless and innumerable, the accusations were made when the jury would believe them and there was never a defense
what is socrates being accused of
he makes the worse argument the stronger (something that is not good or true he persuades people to believe) and he does not believe in the gods
Why is socrates wise and why is he unwise
socrates is wise because he knows that he doesn’t know, he is unwise because he does not have human wisdom (the ability to make stuff)
Counterargument against corrupting the youth
its impossible to say that everyone improves the youth except for socrates, and he does not do it deliberately
counterargument against being an atheist
he believes in divine actions
greatest evil to happen to men
doing injustice
greatest good to happen to men
having excellence of soul and discussing virtue and wondering
why doesn’t socrates fear death
death is either a pleasant sleep or death is change and he will be in good company, a good man cannot be harmed in death
