Test 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are waves

A

The distance of open sea which wind blows is called fetch. When a wave breaks the water moves up the shore is called swash. The water that returns back to the sea is known as backwash

Q

What is compression

A

When waves crash against a cliff, air gets trapped in the cracks and joints on the cliff face and becomes compressed. When the waves : retreat, the pressure is suddenly released. This process of compression and release happens repeatedly until the rock eventually shatters.

What is a bay and headland

A

A bay is a curved area where waves have eroded the coastline.eg.Dublin bay. A headland is an area of hard rock jutting into the sea.eg. Brayhead

7
Q

Give me an explanation of a sea cliffs

A

Waves erode a notch. On the coastline the high water mark and the low water mark. The notch gets larger due to hydraulic action. Then undercutting occurs and overtime an overhang is created and eventually collapse. Wave cut platform is then created at the base of the cliff. Compression and abrasion constantly erode the cliff so it retreats into the coastline

Q

What are sea stacks and stumps

Q

What is longshore drift

A

The material transported by waves, such as sand, shingle, mud and eroded material, is called the load. The movement of the load along the coastline is called longshore drift.

13
Q

What does longshore drift involve

A
  1. Waves approach and move up the shore at an angle (matching the direction of the prevailing wind). When a wave breaks, the swash moves the load up the shore at an angle and deposits some material there, and so the material is moved along the shore.
  2. The backwash carries material back down the shore. This movement follows the slope of the beach, and is usually in a straight line.

The process is repeated over and over, resulting in the gradual movement of material along the shore in a zigzag fashion.

16
Q

Give me an explanation for beaches

A

When waves break they lose energy and it’s unable to carry its load. The swash carries materials up the shore and deposit it. When unable to carry material back the backwash is weak than the swash. Heaviest material is dropped first than the material is carried to the shoreline. Overtime material builds up forming a beach

17
Q

Define the term sand dunes

A

Sand dunes are a build up of sand at the Bach of the beach above high tide.eg. Castlegregory in Co. Kerry

18
Q

What is a sand split

A

A sand split is a long ridge of sand or shingle that stretches across a bay and is only connected to one side of the bay.eg. Rossbeigh Strand near Glenbeigh Co. Kerry

19
Q

Define the term lagoons

A

A lagoon is an area of water that has been cut off from the sea by a sandbar.eg. Lady’s Island Lake Co. Wexford

20
Q

What are tombolons

A

A tombolo is a Isherwood of sand that connects the mainland to an island.eg. Howth in Co. Dublin

21
Q

What are sea walls

A

Sea walls break the power of incoming waves and their curved tops pushes them out to sea.eg. Salthill in Galway

22
Q

Define the term rock armour

A

When a wave breaks and hits the rock amour it loses energy and it also reduces erosion.eg. Lahinch in Clare

23
Q

What are gabions

A

It is a wire cage filled with small stones placed in front of beaches, sand dunes protest the beach.eg. Lahinch in Clare

24
Q

What was the cause of storm Desmond

A

It had 2 and in some parts up to 3 times its normal amount of rainfall in the winter

25
Q

Why did lots of flooding occur

A

Unusual high levels of rainfall, lack of planing an poor management of Shannon waterway

26
Q

What were the impacts on humans frome storm Desmond

A

• Thousands of homes flooded
• Large areas of agricultural farmland covered in water
• Roads and other infrastructure severely damaged
• Businesses forced to shut during the busy Christmas period
• Livestock lost.
