How does an osmotic diuretic (such as Mannitol) work?
Inhibits reabsorption of water and sodium (Na); major effect in the proximal convoluted tubule and the descending limb of Henle’s loop. Expands extracellular fluid and plasma volume, increases blood flow to kidney, washes out the cortical medullary gradient, preventing concentration of urine.
What is meant by a potassium sparing diuretic (such as spironolactone)?
Potassium-sparing diuretics are diuretic drugs that do not promote the secretion of potassium into the urine.
