The central nervous system Flashcards
(24 cards)
What causes epilepsy?
Uncontrolled electrical discharges by a large group of neurons.
What is generalized seizures?
It is when the electrical disruptions occurs on both sides of the brain.
What is Focal seizures?
When the electrical disruptions occurs in specific area of the brain.
What does SUDEP means?
Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy
What is an electroencephalography (EEG)?
It is a test to determine the electrical activity of the brain.
What are the main parts of the brain?
The cerebrum, cerebellum, diencephalon, brainstem.
What is the cerebrum?
The largest section, with the four lobes.
What is the corpus callosum?
A tissue that connects the right and left hemispheres of the cerebrum.
What is the outer surface of the brain covered in? What does it do?
It is covered in gyri (bump) and sulci (grooves). It create a larger surface of area for more neurons.
What cause a stroke?
A blockage of blood flow to an area of the brain. most likely by a cloth.
What are the two types of stroke and which one is the most frequent?
Hemorrhagic (13%) and ischemic (87%)
What is the cause of an ischemic stroke?
A blockage of blood vessel.
What is the cause of an hemorrhagic stroke?
A blood vessel rupturing.
What is the particularity with the side of a stroke?
the left will paralyze the right and vice versa.
What are the protection of the brain and spinal cord?
Skull, meninges, cerebrospinal fluid, blood-brain barrier.
What does the blood-brain barrier do?
It protect brain from invaders and dangerous substances.
what are the three main section of the brainstem?
medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain.
what is the job of the brainstem?
it is the reflex center, control heartbeat, respiration, and blood vessel diameters.
The medulla oblongata is home of the decussation of pyramids, what is it?
a crossover point that change the left and right from the brain.
What is the cerebellum job?
coordination, maintain of balance, moving smoothly, and sustain normal postures.
What are the main part of the diencephalon?
The thalamus, the hypothalamus, the limbic system, the pineal gland.
Where is the diencephalon found?
In the inner part of the brain.
What are the four major lobe of the cerebrum?
Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital.
