The Circulatory System Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the circulatory system function?
The circulatory system helps transport oxygen, glucose, carbon dioxide and nutrients around the body
Controls the body temperature
Protects the body as the blood contains cells and antibodies to fight off infection
Features of veins?
Transports unoxygenated blood back to the heart, thin walls
Features of arteries?
Transports oxygenated blood to muscles to supply them with oxygen and nutrients, thick walls
Features of capillaries?
Allows gaseous exchange, they’re one cell wall thick
How does age, gender, diet, exercise and stress affect your blood pressure?
Age – increases with age
Gender – males tend to have higher blood pressure that women
Stress – can increase your blood pressure
Diet – salt and saturated fats can increase blood pressure Exercise – regular exercises can lower your blood pressure gradually
What are red blood cells?
Contains red coloured compounds called hemoglobin which bonds with oxygen to form oxyhaemobin, they transports oxygen to tissues
What are white blood cells?
Produces chemicals called antibodies to fight infection
What are platelets?
Help repair tissue and close wounds both internally and externally
