Consequence 1: increased Rivalry, expand on this point

  • Kennedy seemed to of won the war of words and many believed Khrushchev had back down
  • Kennedy seen as a great statesmen who stood up to communism and won
  • many leading politicians in the Soviet Union thought Khrushchev had been humiliated and wanted to remove him
  • Mao Zedong, chines leader, criticised Khrushchev for putting missiles in Cuba then removing them (sign of weakness)
  • Khrushchev was it as a victory as he prevented nuclear war and saved Cuba from invasion however within the Soviet Union he was seen as a failure

Consequence 2: Hotline, expand on this

  • the superpowers had nearly gone to war which could of been devastating
  • replied that the crisis was over and tension decreased
  • to ensure the leaders didn’t have to communicate by letter in a time of emergency a hotline was established between the Kremlin and the white house

Consequence 3: treaties, expand

  • the limited test ban treaty was signed August 1963: both Soviet and USA stop testing nuclear weapons in the atmosphere
  • 1968 the superpowers, along with Britain and other countries, signed the outer space treaty: promised to use outer space for peaceful purposes and not nuclear weapons in orbit
  • Followed by the Nuclear Non proliferation treaty of 1968: stop the spread of nuclear weapons, countries who signed agreed to not develop nuclear arms
  • relations further improved in 1963 as the USA sold grain to the Soviet Union
