Q

Why did Fleming play a role in the development of pencillin

A

While he was not the first to discover or use it, he was the first to publish it on papers. The first was actually in the middle ages, while people didn’t understand the pencillin in mouldy bread but knew it stopped infection. Lister used pencillin to treat a nurse prior in 1871, and Pasteur had already noted down this as well.

Q

Who was Florey and Chain

A

They led a team at Oxford Hospital who followed up on Flemings research of pencillin, their goal being to purify it from mould. In 1940s he seeked outside funding for the purification of pencillin as the british government was busy fighting the war. America funded lots of the pencillin purfiication

Q

5 factors for the development of pencillin

A

1: technology, without developments it would be impossible to mass produce or store the high amounts of pencillin needed during the war

2: Attitudes in society, during WW1 there was lots of urgency for a antibiotic medications

  1. Science, scientists with new scientific methods and experimentation could identify the pencillin in cultures and modify it to attack certain bactera.
  2. Individuals Chain and Flore built on Earnst’s work on pencellin. All three didn’t take out patents that would make this costly.
  3. Instutions, the american government funded the research for a heavy and long time.
