The Immune System Flashcards
(12 cards)
The immune system
Guards the body against possible infections
Mon-specific défenses
Things that can guard against many types of threats.
Eg. Skin, mucous membranes, phagocytic cells (swallow bacteria and virus)
Pathogen
Disease causing agent
Specific défense
Deals with 1 type of threat.
Immune system sends weapons specifically for that antigen.
Antigen
Protein, or some surface feature that the immune system learns to recognize as being foreign.
Eg of specific défenses
Killer T lymphocytes
B Lymphocytes
Helper T lymphocytes
Killer T lymphocytes
Recognizes a certain type of foreign cell or cancer cell.
They kill by bursting their targets.
B lymphocytes (plasma cells)
Make antibodies specific to 1 type of antigen. Antibody proteins fits a certain antigen like a lock and key. This prevents it from entering host cell.
Help T lymphocytes
Controls immune system by sending out chemical signals.
Types of vaccinations
Passive immunity
Active immunity
Passive immunity
Giving the patient pre-formed antibodies gives them immediate protection, but the protection is short-lived
Active immunity
Injecting the patient with antigens, their immune system will learn about this certain pathogen. Days or weeks later, your body will develop ability to protect itself from disease.
Not immediate, but my protect for your lifetime
