Viruses Flashcards
(11 cards)
Viruses
They are little more than a few dozen genes surrounded by a protein coat
Not a true cell
What can’t viruses do?
Grow, repair themselves, feed, or move on their own
Active viruses
Only when they make contact with host cell
Parasites
Viruses are parasites because they take over the host cell to make more copies of themselves
Lytic cycle
Viruses enter host cell and tricks it into making new virus particles
Lysogenic cycle
Viral genes enter host cell, but do not reproduce right away.
They insert themselves into host cell’s chromosomes.
Prophage
Viral genes
Viral diseases 1
- Sexually transmitted infections
Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Herpes
Human Papilloma virus (genital warts)
Viral diseases 2
Other viral infections
Cold, flu, West Nile virus, rabies, yellow fever, Ebola, Hepatitis (A,B,C)
Viral infections 3
Some viruses linked to cancer
Human Papilloma virus (HPV) is leading cause of cervical cancer
Hepatitis is cause of liver cancer
Viral specificity
Refers to what hosts the virus is capable of infecting. Most viruses are specific to only 1 or few types of cells.
Eg. Cold virus only infects cells found lining respiratory track.
Ravies can affect any mammal
