IPBES
Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
The mission is to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development
Today more than 140 countries have joined IPBES
IPBES consensus reports
IPBES deliver scientific consensus reports upon request from the member states
IPBES prepare consensus reports across disciplinary boundaries
IPBES designate ‘option for actions’
All consensus reports are adopted unanimously by the member states
The IPBES assessment process
- Request and scope
- Expert evaluation
- Approval and acceptance of the final assessment report
- Use of the final assessment findings
The biodiversity crisis
We loose species at a rate of 10 to several 100 times higher than the normal background rate
Drivers of loss
Habitat fragmentation
(Micro) climate change
Exploitation
Nexus elements
The five nexus-elements (climate change, water, biodiversity, food and health) are interlinked and interdependent
Biodiversity loss has a negative impact on the other nexus elements
Trade-offs and synergies
Activities impacting on element influence other elements
Response options
Many response options are already available to actors in multiple sectors for sustainably managing biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change
- options to facilitate synergies
- implement together and in sequence
The underlying causes for the indirect drivers
Disconnect from and domination over nature and people
Concentration of power and wealth
Prioritization of short-term, individual and material gains
Biodiversity on the agenda
Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
EU Policy
Three main aims of IPBES Denmark
Communication
Involvement
Raise funds for research
How to take IPBES messages to national level?
Micro “IPBES report”
- status
- drivers
- opportunities for actions
How does IPBES make a difference?
- High scientific credibility
- Create scientific consensus like IPCC
- Holistic approach: involves different research disciplines
- Look at all drivers of biodiversity loss: direct, indirect and behind
- Reports are accepted and ownership brought to governments
- Provide options for actions: what could be done
- Attention towards all stakeholders and diverse values of biodiversity
- Elephants in the room: regional, national and local levels
