The Nervous System- CNS Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the 6 AO1 points you must know for the central nervous system?
-definition and function
-the brain- structure and function
-the spinal cord- structure and function
-protection of the CNS
-types of neurons in the CNS
-the role of the CNS in reflex actions
What are the two main components of the CNS?
The CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord
What is the primary role of the brain within the CNS?
The brain is responsible for processing and interpreting sensory information and coordinating voluntary and involuntary responses
What is the main function of the spinal cord within the CNS?
The spinal cord relays information between the brain and the peripheral nervous system and is responsible for reflex actions
What are the main regions of the brain in the CNS and what do they do?
The cerebral cortex , which is the outer layer of the brain, and what is what distinguishes human mental functions from those of animals.
The brain is divided into two hemispheres- the right and the left
Each hemispheres has 4 lobes= the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital
How is the CNS protected?
The CNS is protected by the skull and the vertebral column
What is a reflex action and how is the spinal cord involved?
The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. It is responsible for reflex action, for example pulling your hand away from a hot plate . It passes messages to and from the brain ad connects nerves to the PNS
.
