The Passage Of Air APPLIED ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Flashcards
1
Q
What order does air travel to the lungs?
A
Nose/mouth Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli
2
Q
Where does gas exchange take place?
A
Alveoli
3
Q
What gas diffuses into the alveoli and which one diffuses out of the alveoli into the blood stream?
A
Carbon dioxide diffuses into the alveoli
Oxygen diffuses into the blood stream.
4
Q
What are the adaptions of the alveoli?
A
Large surface area One cell thick - short diffusion distance Good blood supply Good ventilation Moist
5
Q
How is the concentration gradient maintained for diffusion to happen into and out of the alveoli?
A
The blood is constantly flowing which means there will be a higher concentration of oxygen in the alveoli than the blood. Therefore, the oxygen can move down the concentration gradient and the gradient is maintained.
