The periodic table Flashcards
(10 cards)
How did Mendeleev sort the elements in his periodic table
He sorted them into groups (columns) based on their properties.
What order did Mendeleev put the elements in his periodic table into
He put them in order of atomic mass and noticed that they would be in columns of similar properties
How did some elements not fit into Mendeleev’s order
Some elements would not be in columns of similar properties
This is because he didn’t take into account the relative abundance of the element’s isotopes
How do we order elements in the periodic table today
In ascending atomic number
What are the periods in the periodic table
The rows
How many shells are around the nucleus
What are the groups in the periodic table
The columns
Similar chemical properties
How many electrons in the outer shell
What do you noble gases (group 0)have that other elements don’t
Full outer shells
What are some properties of metals
Form positive ions Conductors high melting/boiling points ductile malleable
What are some properties of nonmetals
Form negative ions
insulators
low melting/boiling points
How did Mendeleev use his table to predict the existence and properties of some elements not yet discovered
He left gaps where elements did not fit
The groups they were in determined their properties
Elements were later found to fit in these gaps
