The peripheral nervous system Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does the peripheral nervous system (PNS) consist of?
All the nerves outside the central nervous system (CNS).
How many pairs of cranial nerves are in the PNS?
12 pairs.
How many pairs of spinal nerves are in the PNS?
31 pairs.
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
Controls voluntary (skeletal) muscles.
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
Controls involuntary actions and maintains homeostasis.
What are the two parts of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic system
Parasympathetic system
What is the role of the sympathetic system?
Prepares the body for action — “fight or flight”.
What is the role of the parasympathetic system?
Returns the body to normal — “rest and digest”.
How do these two systems work?
Antagonistically — they have opposite effects.
