The Shoulder Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the 3 main bones of the shoulder?
Humerus, scapula, clavicle
What are the 3 main joints in the shoulder?
Strenoclavicular (SC)
Acromioclavicular (AC)
Glenohumeral (GH)
What is the glenohumeral joint?
Ball and socket joint
Formed by head of humerus and the shallow glenoid cavity of the scapula
Ligaments limit movement and are critical to stability and function
Stability is also provided by tendon and muscles
What is the articular capsule?
Encircle the joint
Attached to the circumference of the glenoid cavity beyond the glenoidal labrum, anatomical neck of the humerus
What are strengthened by muscles and tendons
Above= suprasinatus
Below= long head of triceps
Behind= tendons of infrasinatus and teres minor
In front= tendon of subscapularis
What are some special features?
Additionally the laxity of the joint capsule: allows increased overhead ROM. Further ROM allowed by movement at acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints
What is the coracohumeral ligaments?
Broad band strengthening the upper part of the capsule
Blends with the tendon of the supraspinatus and subscapularis
What are the glenonumeral ligaments?
In addition to the coracohumeral ligament, 3 supplemental bands which are named the glenohumeral ligaments strengthened the capsule
What is the glenodial labrum?
Fibrocartilaginous rim attached rouble the edge of the glenoid cavity.
Deepens the articular cavity, protecting edges of the bone,
Continuous with tendon of long head of biceps branchii
What is the synovial membrane?
From margin of glenoid cavity over the labrum and inner surface of capsule, covers the lower part and side of the anatomical neck of humerous to articular cartilage on the head
