  1. Inequalities between men/women based on power status.
  2. These create conflict between men and women
  3. Gender roles/inequalities are socially constructed.
  4. Patriarchy - A system of social structures and practices which men dominate to oppress and exploit women.

These 4 features reinforce patriarchy. and institutions.

What are the 6 structures of patriarchy (Walby)

A

The state - The gov is run by men so policies and laws tend to favour men interests.

Domestic labour - Women still complete most of the domestic labour. (family/households)

Violence - Men are physically stronger than women so can intimidate them. (Domestic violence)

Paid work - Women earn less than men and they are low paid or in part time work (glass ceiling effect)

Sexuality - the difference in how men and women sexuality is perceived. (Women over sexualised)

Culture - portrayal of women in media is often in a sexual way this reinforces their lower status as still seen as an object.

A

Women should have the same rights/freedom as men.
Equality can be achieved by gradual reforms so changes to laws/policies/education

A

Family - More women pursuing careers (demographic trends - lower birth rates)
(Equal divisions of labour)

Social policy - Shared paternity/maternity - nursery vouchers.

Education - Change in expectations but sometimes have to put more effort in.

Workplace - Challenge the glass ceiling - equal pay acts.

Law - Equal pay act - anti-discrimination laws

Political lesbianism - Only way to achieve equality - men =the enemy and heterosexual relationships are sleeping with the enemy.
Lesbian relationships are the only non-oppressive form of sexuality.

They act as a reserve labour force.
