(15 cards)
Definition of Therapeutic Exercise (it’s big one)
The systematic, planned performance of physical movements, postures, or activities intended to provide a patient/client w/ means to:
-remediate/prevent impairments
-improve/restore/enhance participation
-prevent/reduce risk factors
-optimize overall health
ROM Definition
Basic technique used for examination of movement and for initiating movement into a purposeful therapeutic intervention
Functional excursion is the distance a muscle is capable of ____________ after it has been (maximally/minimally) ____________
shortening; maximally; elongated
Example of Active insufficiency
difficulty making a fist when wrist is flexed
Example of Passive insufficiency
fingers flex when wrist is extended
What are the 3 types of ROM exercises?
PROM
AROM
A-AROM
PROM definition
Motion produced by an external force, manual or mechanical
AROM definition
Motion produced by active contraction of the muscles
A-AROM definition
Motion produced by a combination of external force and active muscle contraction (type of AROM)
PROM does not do what?
PROM does NOT strengthen or stabilize!
Purpose of A-AROM
It bridges AROM and weakness
Contraindications to ROM exercises (2)
- when motion is disruptive to the healing process
- when the pt’s response or condition is life threatening
In the Exam/Eval/Tx Planning Phase of applying ROM, it is important that the PT determines: (3)
and then ________ the patient, ________, and __-____ (modify) as appropriate
-appropriate level of ROM
-safe amount of motion
-pattern of motion to best meet goals
monitor; document; re-eval (modify)
How should a PT prepare a pt for ROM? (4)
-explain intervention
-free area from restriction (access)
-drape
-position pt & PT (yourself body mechanics)
How should a PT apply ROM techniques? (5)
