how should you place the chains on a calf’s leg during a dystocia?
half-hitch over the dorsal aspect above and below the fetlock
if you are unable to get both half hitches, get the lower one (so you will not break a growth plate)
how should you manipulate a calf if it presenting in an abnormal position during a dystocia?
push the calf entirely back into the uterus, then move the limbs into the correct position MEDIALLY to avoid uterine or vaginal tears
after the calf is born, following dystocia, what should you check the mother for?
trauma, tears, twins
what are the 3 P’s?
PRESENTATION - relation of spinal axis of fetus with respect to dam
POSITION - relation of dorsum of fetus to quadrant of maternal pelvis
POSTURE - relation with respect to extremities
what is considered retained fetal membranes in a cow?
retained if not passed within 12 hours of calving
how do you perform a vaginal cytology?
- swab cranial vagina
- roll on slide
- stain with Diff-Quick
what does a progesterone of 2.0 indicate?
LH surge
what does a progesterone of 4-6 indicate?
