Why is the New Right worried about education?
Effects of state control
- inefficiency and lack of business initiative due to no incentive, not given needed skilled = dependenncy culture
One size fits all
- does not meet individual and community needs
- different areas need different skills, national curriculum not suitable for this
Lower Standards
- state-run schools not accountable to those who use them, answer to local authorities = lower standards and less qualified workforce
Key study to support New Right’s view on education
Chubb and Moe
- children from low income families who go to private school perform 5% better, because private schools answer to their consumers
- I.e. through marketisation to stay competing against rival schools
What solutions to these problems do the New Right recommend?
Impose a competition structure
- e.g. OFSTED
Make sure schools pass on shared culture
- ensure good work ethic
