thoracic trauma Flashcards
(13 cards)
what are conditions associated with thoracic trauma
pneumothorax, pulmonary contusion, rib fx, hemothorax, diaphragmatic hernia, lung lobe torsion
when can a spontaneous pneumothorax occur
ruptured abscess, ruptured tumor, ruptured bulla
what percentage of pt do well and resolve without sx with good supportive care after blunt trauma induced pneumothorax
95%
what is a tension pneumothorax
rapid accumulation of air in the pleural space that results in positive intrapleural pressure - DANGER
how do you tx tension pneumothorax?
thoacentesis, chest tube, O2, cage rest
what are the land marks for thoracocentesis
7-10th ICS
what modifications can be made when performing a thoracocentesis?
over the needle catheter to prevent lacerating the lung
how do you tx pulmonary contusions
don’t stress the animal, O2, rest, abx?, bronchodilators
how do you tx hemothorax
treat shock, drain blood, autotransfusion, ID etiology
what is flail chest
paradoxical chest wall movement of unstable segment
what happens when patient breaths in with flail chest?
thoracic wall collapses
what are etiologies of lung lobe torsion?
trauma, deep chested breeds, R middle lung lobe (not firmly affixed), left cranial lung lobe (pugs)
what is common viscera found in diaphragmatic hernias
liver, spleen, bowel, stomach, opmentum
