Q

What 2 forms of epithelial tissue occur in the body and briefly describe each

A
  1. Covering and lining epithelium; forms the outer layer of skin , lines the digestive and respiratory systems
  2. Glandular epithelium; fashions the glands of the body.

Q

Name and describe the 2 classifications of epithelial tissue

A
  1. Simple epithelia; consist of a single cell layer

2. Stratified epithelia; composed of 2 or more cell layers stacked on top of eachother

Q

Name and briefly describe the 3 main components of connective tissue

A
  1. Ground substance (unstructured material that fills space between the cells)
  2. Tissue fibers (proteins that provide support)
  3. Tissue cells (each connective tissue class has a resident cell type that exists in immature (-blast) and mature forms (-cyte))

Q

Briefly describe the 3 types of loose connective tissue

A
  1. Areolar = serves as a universal packing material between other tissues
  2. Adipose = fat tissue
  3. Reticular = resembles areolar connective tissue, but the only fibers in its matrix are reticualr fibers

Q

Briefly describe the 3 types of dense connective tissue

A
  1. Dense regular = contains closely packed bundles of collagen fibers running parallel to the direction of pull
  2. Dense irregular = same as dense regular, but they are arranged irregularly
  3. Elastic = found in elastic ligaments (those connecting the adjacent vertebrae

Q

Name the 3 kinds of muscle tissue

A
  1. Skeletal muscle
  2. Cardiac muscle (found only in the walls of the heart)
  3. Smooth muscle (named so because the cells have no visible striations)
