tissues Flashcards
(20 cards)
define tissue
a group of cells that are similar in structure and work together to carry out a particular task.
state the 4 main types of tissue
epithelial, muscular, connective and nervous
describe epithelial tissue
tissue that covers/lines organs, etc.
the cells are closely joined (side by side)
examples of epithelial tissue
outer layer of skin
inner/outer organ lining
describe connective tissue
supports/holds body parts together
cells are far apart (matrix between them- non cellular material)
examples of connective tissue
bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood
describe nervous tissue
made up of specialised nerve cells (neurons), carries messages all around body via projections
examples of nervous tissue
the brain, spinal cord and nerves
3 types of muscular tissue
skeletal, smooth, cardiac
examples of skeletal tissue
the muscles you can feel in your arms and legs.
describe skeletal tissue
has striations (stripes), multiple nuclei, cylindrical shape, makes up the muscle attached to the bone, voluntary muscles.
examples of smooth tissue
stomach walls, walls of intestines, walls of blood vessels, uterus.
describe smooth tissue
no striations, involuntary, cells are flat and side by side.
examples of cardiac tissue
the heart
describe cardiac tissue
makes up most of the heart, involuntary, pumps blood, intercalated discs divide cells.
what is an organ
body structures that are made up of tissue types that work together to carry out a task.
e.g. the heart pumps blood around the body
define a system
a group of organs that work together to carry out a particular task.
e.g. the circulatory system includes vessels and the heart to pump blood around the body.
define an organism
all body systems work together to meet the needs of a living and functioning being.
e.g. a human
what is the cell theory
all organisms are made of cells which are the basic units of life that arise from pre existing cells
organisational structure of the body
- cells
- tissues (epithelial)
- organs (heart)
- systems (circulatory)
- organism (humans)
