TOPIC 1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the functions of a living organism?
MRS GRENC :
M: MOVEMENT
R: RESPIRATION
S: SENSING
G: GROWTH
R:REPRODUCTION
E:EXCRETION
N:NUTRITION
C:CONTROL
What’s eukaryotic vs prokaryotic
Eukaryotic are cells that have a membrane bound nucleus whereas prokaryotic cells don’t
Order of classification
Keratosis Pilaris can’t only fuh gay skin
-KINGDOM PHYLUS CLASS ORDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES
PLANT FEATURES:
-multi-cellular organisms
-autotrophic organisms (absorbs sunlight for energy for respiration)
-photosynthesize
-reproduces asexually and sexually
-converts carbs into starch/ sucrose/ cellulose
FUNGI features:
-some are multicellular, some are unicellular
-don’t photosynthesize
-some can be pathogenic e.g athelete’s foot
-they feed SAPROTROPHICALLY
How do fungi feed
SAPROTROPHIC FEEDING: they secrete digestive enzymes extracellularly onto food
-enzymes break it down
-food is absorbed by fungi
PROTOCTIST FEATURES
-unicellular organisms
-some have an animal-like structure: AMEOBA whereas some have a plant-like structure: CHLORELLA
-some can be pathogenic: PLASMODIUM which causes malaria
5 kingdoms of life eukaryotic vs prokaryotic
EUKARYOTIC:
-animals
-plants
-fungi
-protoctists
PROKARYOTIC:
-bacteria
ANIMAL FEATURES:
-heterotrophs
-multi-cellular organisms
-can move from place to place
-has a cell membrane only
-stores carbs as glycogen
BACTERIA FEATURES:
-some can photosynthesize but most are heterotrophic
-uni0cellular
-can be pathogenic: PNEUMOCOCCUS, which causes pneumonia
-some can be safe: GUT BACTERIA
What’s a pathogen?
