Topic 10-11 - Equilibrium Flashcards
(9 cards)
Mole fraction of gas
Moles of a specific gas divided by total moles of all gases in the mixture.
Partial pressure
Pressure exerted by a gas in a mixture. Calculated as mole fraction × total pressure.
Total pressure
Sum of all partial pressures in a gas mixture.
Reaction quotient vs Kc, Kp
At equilibrium, the reaction quotient equals the equilibrium constant; otherwise, it does not.
Features of a dynamic equilibrium
Reversible reaction, closed system, forward and backward rates equal, no net concentration change.
Homogeneous system
All substances in the same phase.
Heterogeneous system
Not all substances are in the same phase.
Le Chatelier’s Principle
System in equilibrium shifts to counteract changes in concentration, pressure, or temperature.
Contact process
Industrial method for H₂SO₄ production involving SO₂ → SO₃ with V₂O₅ catalyst.
