Topic 9: Metals Flashcards
(42 cards)
Are metals good conductors of heat and electricity?
Yes, they are.
Are non-metals good conductors of electricity?
No, except for graphite.
What does malleable mean?
Can be hammered into shapes.
What does ductile mean?
Can be drawn into wires.
Do metals have high or low melting points?
High melting points.
Are non-metals brittle or strong?
Brittle.
What happens when a metal reacts with acid?
Metal + Acid → Salt + Hydrogen
What happens when metal reacts with water?
Metal + Water → Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
What happens when metal reacts with steam?
Metal + Steam → Metal Oxide + Hydrogen
Why is aluminium used in aircraft?
Low density.
Why is aluminium used in cables?
Low density and good conductor.
Why is aluminium used in food containers?
It resists corrosion.
Why is copper used in wires?
It conducts electricity well and is ductile.
What is an alloy?
A mixture of a metal with other elements.
What are alloys harder than?
Pure metals.
What is brass made of?
Copper and zinc.
What is stainless steel made of?
Iron, carbon, chromium, and nickel.
Why are alloys stronger?
Mixed atom sizes stop layers from sliding.
What is the reactivity series?
K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, C, Zn, Fe, H, Cu, Ag, Au
Which metals react with cold water?
Potassium, sodium, calcium.
Which metal reacts with steam?
Magnesium.
Which metals do NOT react with acid?
Copper, silver, gold.
What is a displacement reaction?
A more reactive metal replaces a less reactive one.
What causes rusting?
Water and oxygen.
