Trailers Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is the maximum permitted mass?
Empty weight + max payload
What are the 2 things you can do with a B drivers license
- Tow a trailer with a max mass of 750kg
- If the mass of the trailer is more than 750kg, you can still tow it as long as the car and the trailer do not exceed 3500kg
What can you do with a B+ license that you cannot with a B license?
Your trailer and car together cannot exceed 4250kg. This is an increase from the 3500kg of the B license
What separates a BE license from a B license?
The trailer itself cannot weigh more than 3500kg
You have a B drivers license. Can you tow a car weighing 2500kg and a trailer weighing 900kg?
Yes!
Remember, the max weight between the car and the trailer for a B license is 3500kg only if the trailer exceeds 750kg. As this is the case, the total weight is 3400kg which is less than 3500kg.
What kind of license would you need to tow a trailer of 850kg with a car of 3000kg?
A B+ license as the max weight between the car and the trailer is 4250kg
You want to tow a 2000kg trailer with a car that weighs 2500kg. What kind of license do you need here?
A BE license
If my trailer is 750kg or less, can the car and trailer weigh more than 3500kg?
Yes!
The limit only applies for trailers that weight more than 750kg
What is the Towing capacity?
The max pulling weight that cannot exceed the capacity of the towing vehicle. The limit is found on the vehicle registration certificate

4m
Max permitted length of a trailer?
12m
Max permitted length of a trailer + car?
18m
Max permitted width of a trailer?
2.55m
Can tow bars obstruct the view of the number plate?
NO!
Give 3 ways of securing a load?
Trailer net
Trailer tarp
Tension straps
Why have a breakaway cable and how does it work?
In case the trailer disconnects from the towing vehicle, a small breakaway cable is connected to the towing vehicle and the handbrake of the trailer.
if the trailer and towing vehicle disconnect, the trailer starts falling behind, causing the breakaway cable to stretch and pull on the trailer’s handbrake, allowing the trailer to come to a complete stop safely.
Why not use both a breakaway cable and secondary cable on the same trailer at the same time?
They have opposite effects; the secondary cable holds the trailer to the towing vehicle in case the primary cable breaks
And the breakaway cable will cause the trailer to stop. WE CANNOT HAVE BOTH
When can secondary couplings be used?
- When the trailer has a max. Permitted mass of 1500kg or less
- An unbraked trailer must have a secondary coupling
When MUST breakaway cables be used?
If the trailer has a max. Permissible mass of >1500kg
Where can you, and can not attach a breakaway cable?
You can attach a breakaway cable to:
- The towing vehicle directly
- Drilled holes or attachments in the tow bar specifically for the breakaway cable
You must not attach a breakaway cable to:
- Neck or head of the tow bar, the breakaway cable will not work
What color is the license plate for trailers and caravans of 750kg or less, or with cargo carriers which block the view of the number plate?
White
What colour is the license plate if the trailers and caravans are more than 750kg?
Yellow
A car carrying bicycles has what color of license plate?
White
What is nose weight?
The vertical pressure exerted on the towbar by the drawbar of the trailer
