Transects RP Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the aim of Required Practical 9?
To measure population size and investigate the effect of a factor on the distribution of a species.
What is a quadrat?
A square frame used to define a sample area for counting species.
What is random sampling?
Using random coordinates to place quadrats to ensure unbiased data collection.
How do you generate coordinates for random sampling?
Use two tape measures at right angles and a random number generator for coordinates.
How do you estimate population size from random sampling?
Calculate mean number of individuals per m² and multiply by the total area.
What is the purpose of a transect?
To study how the distribution of species changes across a habitat.
How do you perform a transect sampling?
Lay a tape measure and place quadrats at regular intervals to count species.
How many times should you repeat a transect?
At least three times in different areas.
What are abiotic factors?
Non-living environmental factors like light
What are biotic factors?
Living environmental factors such as competition and predation.
What does “population” mean in ecology?
All individuals of a species in a specific area.
What does “distribution” mean in ecology?
How individuals are spread out in a given area.
Why must you take the size of the quadrat into account?
Because different sizes will sample different areas
What safety precautions should be taken during fieldwork?
Wash hands afterward and avoid damaging habitats or species.
What does repeating sampling help ensure?
Reliability and accuracy of data by reducing the effect of anomalies.
Why is it important to sample randomly?
To avoid bias and ensure representative results.
