What is flooding

A

Person with phobia is directly exposed to their feared stimulus, with the goal of eliminating fear response through immediate exposure in a controlled environment

What is systematic desensitisation

A

Slowly increasing exposure levels of the phobia object to individuals whilst encouraging them to relax at each stage. Could take weeks or months .

A

Patiens prefer it. This is largely because it does not cause the same degree of trauma as flooding

A

Effecctivness of systematic desensitisation may be limitedd to the controlled environment of a therapists office and may not translate to real world experiences.

What is a weakness of Flooding (besides unethical)

A

Flooding may not be effective for complex phobias like socil phobias, this phobia is more related to a situation rather than a stimulus. Social phobias may beenfit more from cognitive therapies

Highly effective and quicker than alternatives, the quick effect is a strenght as it makes treatment cheaper
