What was the context of the TOV?
War ended on in November 1918.
Wasn’t a surrender just an agreement to stop fighting and pull out of occupied areas.
Conference for agreement began Jan 1919.
The German people assumed it would be fair.
What were the key dates for TOV?
18th Jan - Allies meet
7th May - German delayed given first draft of the treaty
16th June - given two weeks to sign
28th June - signed
Who was there? ( TOV )
America , Britain and France led it and Italy had a prominent presence but their contribution is questionable.
What were the territory terms of the treaty
13% of germanys land taken
West Prussia given to Poland to form polish corridor
Alsace-Loraine goes back to France
Saar given to France for 15 years - bad as can’t get resources any where else
What were the military terms of the TOV?
Conscription , tanks , airforce , gas and subs banned
Army - 100 000
Navy - 15 000 and 6 ships
What were the war guilt terms?
Article 231 - full responsibility
Humiliated and weak/vulnerable
£6.6 billion.
What was Germanys reaction to the treaty?
Horror and disbelief
Until 1914 had been a great European military power
Abdication and signing shocked millions as they believed it was humiliating.
What was Germanys other reactions to the TOV?
Separation of German speakers went against 14 points.
War guilt seem as unjust
Reparation too high - cripple economy
Allied occupation and control of territory infringed values
Disarming and excluding from league showed unjust discrimination of European power
