Ablative of means/instrument
Lit. ‘with’

Ablative of comparison
Lit. 2nd term of comparison goes into the ablative

Ablative of agent
Lit. used to indicate the person performing the action in a passive sentence
e.g. “Caesar admonerur a dis”
Ablative of place
Lit. indicates the location where an action occurs, often using the preposition “in” (in, at, on)
E.g. “Vivimus in magna villa”
Ablative of time when/time duration
Lit. used to express time when or within which an action occurred, often translated as “at,” “on,” “in,” or “within”
Ablative of topic
Lit. indicates the subject or object of a verb or the thing being spoken about, often translated as “about” or “concerning”
E.g. “De rerum natura”
Ablative of respect
Lit. narrowing something down to one category
E.g. “Caecus uno oculo”
Ablative of material
Lit. indicating the substance something is made from, is formed with or without a preposition, often using “ex” or “de”
E.g. “ex corpore et animo contamus”
Ablative of manner
Lit. describes how an action is done, often using an abstract noun in the ablative case, and sometimes with the preposition “cum”
E.g. “cum magno animo”
Ablative of separation
Lit. indicates something being separated from another, often translated as “from” or “away from,” and can appear with or without a preposition like ab, ex, or de
E.g. “ex patria expulsus sum”
Ablative of company
Lit. To express “company” in the ablative, you use the preposition “cum” followed by the noun in the ablative case

Ablative of characteristic
Lit. express a characteristic or quality, you use the ablative of quality, which is a noun in the ablative case, often accompanied by an adjective, to describe the qualities of a person or thing
