Types Of Joints Flashcards
Synovial Joint
Articulating bones are separated by a fluid filled cavity.
Cartilaginous Joint
Bones that form the joint are attached with a white fibro-cartilaginous disk.
Allows a little movement.
Ball and socket
Sphere or crescent shaped joint end articulates with the cup like socket of another.
Provides the best range of movement.
Hinge joint
Joint between 2 or more bones.
The bones can only move along 1 axis and either flex or extend
Gliding joint
Where the articulating surfaces are essentially flat.
Only allows for a small movement between bones.
Pivot joint
Cylindrical head of bone that fits into a sleeve of bone, or ligaments with another bone.
Provides rotational movement only.
Condyloid joint
Provides mutliaxial movement
Saddle joint
Both joint ends are shaped like a saddle. Allows for greater movement
Fibrous joint
These joints are held together with strong connective tissue.
Leave no room for movement.
