U3 AOS2 - DP1: Operant Conditioning Flashcards
(13 cards)
Operant conditioning
a learning process in which the likelihood of a voluntary behaviour occurring is determined by its consequences
Characteristics of operant conditioning
Active learner, decisions on behaviour and conscious
3 Phases
Antecedent, behaviour and consequence
Antecedent
stimulus conditions that exist prior to response.
Behaviour
action the learner undertakes in response to the antecedent
Consequence
something that makes a behaviour more or less likely to occur again
Consequences in operant conditioning
Positive / negative reinforcement & punishment
Reinforcement
a stimulus from the environment that increases the likelihood of a response occurring in the future
Positive reinforcement
applying something desired to increase the likelihood the behaviour will be repeated
Negative reinforcement
taking away something undesired to increase the likelihood the behaviour will be repeated
Punishment
a stimulus from the environment that decreases the likelihood of a behaviour occurring again
Positive punishment
applying something undesired to decrease the likelihood the behaviour will be repeated
Negative punishment
taking away something desired to decrease the likelihood the behaviour will be repeated
