de industrialisation - increased automation like machines led to job loss - other countries could produce good more cheaply
globalisation - a lot of manfacturing has moved over seas due to cheaper labour

airports - new runway for heathrow - extra 700 planes a day but would increase noise and air pollution in the area and incr greenhg
railways - HS2 line linking birm, lond, Leeds and Manchester will increase capacity and allow faster journeys between major English cities

transport - channel tunnel links uk to france
commonwealth - promotes cooperation through trade and aid
evidence for the north - south divide
wages are generally lower e.g. the 2014 average weekly wage in huddersfield was 40 percent less than in london
gcse results are generally better in the south than they are in the midlands or the north

in the south of cumbria the south lakes are found, the pop decreased by 0.8 percent from 05 to 2015 due to a decline in jobs like agriculture and manufacturing

how is the country attempting to reduce the north south divide
enterprise zones - 50 of them have been created across england, scotland and wales - reduced taxes, rates are reduced up to 100 percent - improved infastructure like superfast broadband
the northern powerhouse - attracting investment in the north and improving transport links between northern cities - e.g. spending 70 mil on schools
