Unicellular organisms (a deeper dive into it!) Flashcards
(7 cards)
When was the first unicellular organism estimated to exist?
4 billion years ago… a LONG time ago!
What are the two types of unicellular organisms?
- Prokaryotic organisms
- Eukaryotic organisms
What are prokaryotic organisms?
A unicellular organism without protective membranes encasing the nucleus and mitochondria.
What are eukaryotic organisms?
Any organism (unicellular or multicellular) whose nucleus and other organelles are encased in mambranes.
How do unicellular organisms get their energy? Provide an example.
They get their energy from other organisms or photosynthesis.
For example, fungi grows on trees and gets it’s energy from the tree.
Unicellular organisms absorb oxygen and diffuse carbon dioxide out of the cell.
True or False?
True!
How do unicellular organisms move around?
Option 1: using cilia, several ahir-like strands
Option 2: using flagellum, one tail-like strand
