What was the main reason for colonization?
Gold, God, and Glory. Gold is the pursuit of wealth using things like gold, silver, and cash crops. God is religion, although it was mainly Christianity at that time. Glory is power, which was obtained by things like how much land you own. It was also similar to fame.
Where did Spain colonize and what did they use it for?
Spain claimed Florida, Texas, and California. They built missions on their acquired land.
Where did French colonize and what did they use it for?
The land they colonized was part of the “New World” and they used it to get profits from fur trading.
What were the New England colonies like?
The New England colonies had rocky soil and a cold climate, which caused them to do jobs such as fishing, lumber, and shipbuilding. It was founded for religious freedom and contained the modern day states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
What were the Middle colonies?
They were an area with rich farmland and a moderate climate. They grew oats, wheat, grains, and livestock. It included the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
What were the Southern colonies like?
They had fertile soil and a warm climate. They grew cash crops, used the Transatlantic Slave Trade for slave labor in plantations, and it was mainly founded for economics. It included Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
What were some of their methods of self government?
They made the Mayflower Compact, Virginia House of Burgesses, Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, and the First Great Awakening. They were able to do this because they were far from Britain.
What is mercantilism and what did it do?
It’s a system where a mother countries uses colonies for more wealth. It upset the colonists because they were being taxed on those items without representation and they couldn’t control their trading.
