Unit 1 Flashcards
(19 cards)
Cohesion
When two of the same molecules form a hydrogen bond
Adhesion
where two different surfaces or phases are attracted and stick together.
Surface tension
the cohesive force at the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist external forces.
capillary action
a combination of cohesion and adhesion that causes water molecules to have gravity move up/ against gravity
Primary Structure
a straight chain of amino acids which is held together by peptide bonds
Secondary structure
when the chain starts to coil or fold
The 2 shapes it can fold into are:
-Aphla Helix(spring)
-beta pleated sheet (folded paper)
-held together by hydrogen bonds
Tertiary Structure
when it becomes a 3D shape because the R groups on the amino acids fold and connect together by hydrogen bonds, covalent bonds, and ionic bonds
How many bonds does A and T have?
2
How many bonds does G and C have?
3
Purine
Double ring
Pyrimidine
single ring for C,U,T
Carbs
C,H,O
Protein
C,H,O,N,S
Nucleic Acids
C,H,O,N,P
Lipids
C,H,O
Hydrophillic
Polar (made up of lots of Oxygens, Sulfuers, and Nitrogens ) and folds towards the outside of a protein structure
Hydrophobic
Non-polar (made up of Hydrogen and Carbon) and folds towards the inside of a protein structure
what does Saturated fat looks like?
Looks like a straight line of a bunch of carbon in the middle that is surrounded by lots of Hydrogen
what does unsaturated fat looks like?
Looks similar to saturated but at least has one double bond leading to the chain looking slanted at the end
