Unit 6 Flashcards
(9 cards)
what does antiparallel mean for DNA?
it runs 5’ by 3’
helicase
unzips double-stranded DNA by breaking the hydrogen bonds between base pairs.
leading strand
the strand where DNA polymerase moves towards the unwound helix
lagging strand
replicates DNA with polymerase in short segments going away from the helicase
Ligase
Bonds fragments together
Transcription
DNA ->mRNA
RNA polymerase reads a DNA sequence and makes a complementary sequence
translation
mRNA->Protein
travels into the ribosome where they turn the RNA strand into amino acids
Inducible Operon
a type of gene regulation where the expression of a set of genes (the operon) is turned on in response to a specific molecule, called an inducer, when it is present in the cell’s environment.
Repressible Operon
gene clusters in prokaryotes that are normally active (expressed) but can be turned off (repressed) by the presence of a specific molecule called a corepressor
