Unit 8 Flashcards
(18 cards)
Stimulus
a signal or combo of signals that causes a response from an organism
Signaling behavior
produces changes in behavior of other organisms
Animals use 5 ways to communicate
-Visual
-Audible
-tactile
-Electrical
-chemical
Communication mechanisms have multiple uses
-Indicate dominance
-Find food
-mark territory
-Ensure reproductive success
Innate behaviors
genetically controlled and can happen without any experience
Learned behaviors
Developed as a result of experience
Cooperative behaviors
teamwork between organisms of the same species,
Cooperative behavior causes
-An increase of the fitness of the individual
-An increase in the survival rate of the population
Aposematism
warning traits on an animal
Endotherm
use heat generated by their own metabolism to maintain body temperature
Ectotherms
rely on outside sources to regulate temperature (Moving into a hotter environment)
Autotrophs
organisms that capture energy from sources in the environment
Heterotroph
capture energy produced by other organisms
Density-dependent factors are:
-competition for resources
-territoriality
-disease
-predation
Density-independent factors are:
-Natural disasters
-pollution
-weather
Carrying capacity
the maximum number of individuals an environment can sustain
Trophic cascade
the negative effect the removal of or decrease in key species has on other trophic levels
Niche partitioning
refers to the decrease in competition over limited resources
