Unit 1 Vocab Flashcards
(21 cards)
Bandwidth
Transmission capacity measure by bit rate
Binary
A way of representing information using only two options: 0 and 1
Bit
A contraction of “Binary Digit”
single unit of info in a computer, typically represented by a 0 or 1
Bit rate (bitrate)
the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time
Byte
8 bits
Latency
time it takes for a bit to travel from its sender to its receiver
Protocol
a set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices
ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange
universally recognized raw test format that any computer can understand
Image
a type of data used for graphics or pictures
pixel
short for “picture element”
fundamental unit of a digital image, typically a tiny square or dot which contains a single point of color of a larger image
RGB
the RGB model used varying intensities of Red, Green, Blue light added together in to reproduce a broad array of colors
abstraction
pulling out specific differences to make one solution work for multiple problems
overflow error
error from attempting to represent a number that is too large
round-off error
error from attempting to represent a number that is too precise. the value is rounded
analog data
data with values that change continuously, or smoothly, over time.
music, colors of a painting, or position of a sprinter during a race
digital data
data that changes discretely through a finite set of possible values
sampling
a process for creating a digital representation of analog data by measuring the analog data at regular intervals called samples
lossless compression
a process for reducing the number of bits needed to represent something without losing any information; reversible process
lossy compresssion
a process for reducing bits needed to represent something which some information is lost or thrown away. not reversible
intellectual property
a work or invention that is the result of creativity, such as a piece of writing or a design, to which one has rights for and which one may apply a patent, copyright, trademark
creative commons
a collection of public copyright licenses that enables the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work, used when an author wants to give people the right to share use, and build upon a work that they have created
