Unit 2 Alcohols and Carboxylic acids Flashcards
3 Different classes of Alcohols
Primary- C-OH is bonded to 1 other carbon
Secondary- C-OH is bonded to 2 other carbon
Tertiary- C-OH is bonded to 3 other carbon
Alcohols
General formula CnH2n+1 OH
Functional group (OH - Hydroxyl)
End in Ol
Carboxylic acids
General formula CnH2n+1 COOH
Functional group (COOH - carboxyl)
End in Oic acid
Neutralisation reactions
A metal oxide + a carboxylic acid + a salt + water
E.g. Copper(II) oxide + ethanoic acid → copper(II) ethanoate + water
A metal hydroxide + a carboxylic acid + a salt + water
E.g. Sodium hydroxide + ethanoic acid → sodium ethanoate + water
A metal carbonate + a carboxylic acid + a salt + water + carbon dioxide
E.g. Sodium carbonate + ethanoic acid → sodium ethanoate + water + carbon dioxide
