Unit 2 Systematic Carbon Flashcards
Alkanes
General formula CnH2n+2
Ending in ane
Single bonds only
Alkenes
General formula CnH2n
Ending in Ene
contains one double bond
Cycloalkenes
General formula CnH2n
Ring structure
Isomers of alkene
What is an isomer
Same molecular formula different structural formulae
How do you test for unsaturation
Bromine water will decolourise is there’s double c-c bonds present
Hydrogenation
Addition of H2 to unsaturated compounds (Alkenes) converting them to saturated compounds (Alkanes)
Hydration
Addition of Water to an unsaturated hydrocarbon to form an alcohol
Dehydration
Removal of water
Usually an Alcohol to form and Alkene
Halogenation
Addition or substitution of halogen atoms
Combustion
Reaction with oxygen the releases energy
Complete- Produces CO2 & H2O
Incomplete- Produces CO or C
Condensation
Two molecules join together and small molecule (Usually water) is eliminated
Reaction between alcohols and acids to form esters and water
