Q

Other than age what are the other risk factors of AD?

A
  1. Cardiovascular factors
-health of brain closely related to health of the heart and blood vessels
  2. Diabetes
-Chronic high levels of insulin and glucose may be toxic to the brain
-Insulin resistance interfere w/ability to breakdown amyloid
  3. Head trauma

What is the patho of AD

A

1.Changes in brain structure and function
2. Genetic factors
-B- amyloid protein production
3. Amyloid plaques
-Plaques 1st develop in areas of the brain used for MEMORY
4. Neurofibrillary tangles

Q

How is AD usually dx?

A
  1. No definitive dx test exist for AD
    -Diagnosed by exclusion
    -Definitive dx requires autopsy
  2. Comprehensive patient evaluation
-complete health history: physical, neurological and mental assessment, lab tests
  3. Brain imaging tests
    -CT, MRI, PET
  4. Neuropsychologic testing
    -mini-cog
    -Mini-mental state exam (MMSE)
22
Q

Can AD be cured?

A

No, no cure or treatment exists to stop the deterioration of brain cells

23
Q

What is the interprofessional care for AD aimed at?

A
  1. Controlling undesirable behavior manifestations
  2. Providing support for family caregivers
24
Q

AD drug therapy consists of?

A
  1. Memantine (namenda)
-NMDA receptor agonist” protects nerve cell against excess amount of glutamate
  2. Cholinesterase inhibitors
    -Donepezil (aricept), Rivastigime (exelon)
  3. Antidepressant
    • Sertaline (zoloft), Citalopram (celexa), Fluoxetine (prozac)
  4. Antipsychotic drugs
    -haloperidol (haldol), resperidone (risperdal)
25
Q

What is the nursing management for AD?
