Unit 2 Concept 2 Flashcards
(39 cards)
Homeostasis
Need of an organism to stay stable by regulating internal conditions
A dynamic equilibrium is maintained= ?
It isn’t always the same, but things stay within a range
Organisims constantly take in what? and have to respond to what?
Constantly take in Stimuli
And have to respond to stimuli in order to maintain homeostasis
Stimulus= a change in what?
A change in environment
Response=a change in what
A change in the organism as a result of a stimulus feedback mechanisms evolve to help maintain homeostasis in organisms as they respond to stimuli
In Positive feedback loop, the output of a system does what to the response
It intesfies the response
Ex: Human child birth
In Negative feedback loop the output of a system cause a counter response return to what?
to a set point
Ex: Human body temperature
Cell membrane
Controlling movement of things in and out of the cell
Peremable
Allowing things to go through.
The cell membrane is picky about what?
What goes in and outside the cell
What things can pass easily through the cell membrane
Small
non polar
hydrophobic
and/or neutral as well as water
What things CANNOT pass. easily through the cell membrane
Polar
and/or large molecules
Passive
Passive transport requires no energy by the cells because molecules move from high concentration to low concentration areas down the concentration gradient.
Active
Active transport requires energy to be spent to bring materials into the cell or expel materials out of the cell moving from low to high concentration against the concentration gradient
Solute
what gets dissolved
Solvent
does the dissolving
Solution
uniform mixture of two or more substances
Concentration
Amount of solute dissolved in solvent
Concentration Gradient
difference in concentration of a substance from one location to another
Simple diffusion
The spreading out of molecules across a membrane until equilibrium is reached
Equilibruim=
equally concentrated gradient from high to an area of low
Molecules move how?
They move down a concentration gradient from high concentration to an area of low concentration
Faciliated Diffusion
A transport protein help to facilitate the diffusion of molecules that normally couldn’t pass through the cell membrane
Transport proteins can act as what?
They can act as a channel or a carrier
